The first Ukrainians to conquer Everest

The first Ukrainians to conquer Chomolungma were Sergey Bershov and Mykhailo Turkevych. They climbed to the top together with the Soviet Union expedition on May 4, 1982.
In 1999, the mountain was conquered by the first Ukrainian national expedition. This event was historical for the country. It emphasized the high level of training and professionalism of Ukrainian climbers.
Today, more and more Ukrainians include climbing this peak in their plans, which makes them part of the global community of summit conquerors.

Among Ukrainian women, Iryna Galay (originally from Mukachevo) was the first to conquer Chomolungma. On May 20, 2016, she reached the summit, where she raised the Ukrainian flag.

Increasing altitude. Each year, the height of the mountain increases by about 4 millimeters. This is due to tectonic activity, as the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates continue to collide.
It is never warm at the summit. Temperatures at the summit never rise above -20°C, and in winter can drop to -60°C. In addition, hurricane-force winds of up to 200 km/h create some of the harshest conditions on Earth.
The place where water “boils”. Due to the low atmospheric pressure at this altitude, water boils at a temperature of only 68°C. This makes cooking a real challenge.
Dead zones. Above 8000 meters begins the so-called “death zone”. Here the oxygen level is so low that the body begins to break down, even if the person does nothing. This makes the climb extremely dangerous.
Mountains of garbage. Since the first ascents, the mountain has “accumulated” thousands of kilograms of garbage: oxygen tanks, tents, clothing, and even human remains. Today, there are programs to clean the mountain in order to preserve its unique nature.
Age. Chomolungma formed about 60 million years ago, making it relatively “young” in a geological sense.
The highest Wi-Fi. You can get an internet signal on the mountain! In 2010, Wi-Fi was installed in the base camps so that climbers could stay connected.
Multiple climbs in one season. Some climbers conquer it several times per season. Sherpa Kami Rita holds the record – he has climbed the mountain 28 times since 1994.
Triangular summit. The mountain has three main “ridges” and two “walls”, which makes it geometrically difficult to climb. Each route requires special skills and equipment.
There was a wedding here. In 2005, a Nepalese couple, Mong Tashi and Pem Dorjee, held a wedding ceremony at the summit, making it the world’s highest wedding.
