Matterhorn (4478 m) — one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Everyone who has ever seen this peak, one way or another dreamed of climbing it. The peak is located on the border with Italy and Switzerland.

Route of trekking “Around the Matterhorn” by days
day
We meet in the city of Zermatt. We have lunch. We leave all unnecessary things in the storage room (in the hotel where we will spend the night on the way back).
We set out on the route.
After an hour and a half we find ourselves in front of a view of incredible beauty from where the entire resort of Zermatt is finally visible – Edelweiss Hutte.
Here we drink coffee, relax, enjoy the view.
The second part of the day is spent in the picturesque canton. We go steeply up along a turbulent mountain river.
Two hours later we find ourselves at the Trift guesthouse. A warm family hotel that operates only three months a year and has been owned and operated by the same family since its inception. The owner will definitely treat you to hot soup and tell you stories about the establishment’s beginnings in 1887.
day
We wake up at 8. In the morning, wild mountain goats usually graze in the hotel courtyard. We have breakfast and move on.
Just 2 hours later, before our eyes, the incredible Matterhorn is washed away from the clouds like a spaceship.
We walk all day from above the plateau, enjoying the view of the main mountain – the magnet of the region. The route lies towards the glacier through the moraine. So usually no one sees this angle of the mountain.
We pass by a mountain lake, where we will definitely make a stop, and go up a steep climb to Schönbielhutte. Here we stay for the night.
day
We leave after breakfast, and spend the first half of the day walking along the “lower tier” under the plateau. The Matterhorn remains before our eyes. We enjoy ourselves, take photos.
We pass a giant dam that supplies water to the whole of Zermatt. The incredible technological structure is ecologically integrated into the landscape. We pass a system of nugels and find ourselves at the lift.
Enjoy a comfortable climb to Schwarzsee and lunch on the summer terrace with a view of the Matterhorn.
After lunch we go to the Hornli hut.
This is an interesting adventure that will require a lot of your attention and self-control.
After 2 hours we arrive in Hornli and stay here for the night (or go down to the Schwarzsee hotel).
day
We have breakfast. (departure time depends on where we spent the night)
We descend to Zermatt via Kulturweg, a trail that preserves the culture of Swiss alpine villages. We stop for coffee and a local dessert.
We return to civilization.
In the evening we go to celebrate with dinner with traditional Swiss Fondue and cocktails at the best bar in town.
day
The famous Matterhorn Glacier Trail awaits us today!
We are heading in the direction of the Monte Rosa massif. Today we travel among the high mountain landscape, formed by rocks and many small glacial lakes, which arose on the site of a large glacier that retreated very recently – 150 years ago.
From this angle, the Matterhorn is an almost perfect triangle, with a completely vertical, as if polished wall, reflecting in the sun. The landscapes are alien! Overnight in the old mountain hotel Gandegg Hut (Gandegghütte) at an altitude of 3029 m.
We spend the night with a view of the beautiful Monte Rosa mountain.
day
We wake up early, leave our things in the storage room at the station and go on another short trek to the iconic high-mountain lakes.
Super photo spot just 4 hours from the center of Zermatt.
It is from here that the view of the Matterhorn opens up, which we are accustomed to from the cover of Tablerone.
In the evening we return to Zermatt. End of the trip.
We leave from the central station.
Or we stay in Zermatt for one more night.
