Climbing the Eiger (3970 m), along the Mittellegi ridge

The charm of the Eiger can best be described as eerily beautiful. This is the most famous almost 4000-meter peak in the Alps.

Available dates:

July 24 - July 26

August 17 - August 19

September 4 - September 6

Complexity:

difficult

Duration:

3 days

Height:

3970 m

Distance:

30 km

The Eiger is probably the most famous almost 4000 meter peak in the Alps and the only one that is mentioned in the same breath as the great names of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Weisshorn. The allure of the Eiger can best be described as eerily beautiful: there is hardly another mountain wall that looms as menacingly as the North Face of the Eiger above Grindelwald. This giant wall with its dramatic climbing history makes hiking in the Alps particularly exciting and shares the reputation of being the most difficult mountain with the North Face of the Jorasses and is still the scene of high-class mountaineering. Looking at the Eiger from the east, you discover a completely unexpectedly slender form. Where the bleak north face and the rocky south face meet, the sharp ridge of the Mittellegga rises into the sky.

The Mittellegi Ridge is a route that requires excellent climbing skills, as well as extensive experience and regular mastery of a full range of belay techniques. Although there are many fixed ropes, the route should not be underestimated: the rocks are often sloping and fragile, and the belay points in the upper third are very poor. After the summit, the long descent of the Eigerjocher requires your full attention.

Overall, this route is for experienced climbers only and should be high on every experienced climber’s bucket list.

An early rise. While it’s still dark, we set out on the route, which begins literally right next to the hut. The technical part of the ascent begins with dawn. Fixed ropes are secured on the most difficult sections.
When we reach the summit, don’t relax, as we’ll have a challenging descent ahead. From the summit, we’ll descend along the west ridge to the Eigergletscher mountain tram station (2,320m). From there, we’ll take the tram to Grindelwald. An additional night at the hut is possible.

03

day

Reserve day / Departure home

Today, you’ll depart independently for Zurich or Geneva airport.
We recommend arriving in Grindelwald a day or two earlier. Hike to altitudes of 3,000 meters.

Note*:
– The program is not final and may be adjusted depending on the weather, the condition of the participants and other factors.

– The main principle in our work is customer safety! If the participant is technically or physically not ready for the climb, the guide has the right, based on the results of acclimatization and three training ascents, to offer an alternative end to the program without compensation or return of funds spent on participation in the program.

– The best time for climbing begins from mid-July after the snow and glaciation melts from the rocky areas, and continues until the first cold weather – usually until mid-September.

– The route is not used if there is a risk of thunderstorms due to the impossibility of sheltering from lightning.

Additional information

This program is individual – during the ascent, one guide works with one client. If clients have sufficient training, it is possible for one guide to work with two clients. This rule was introduced based on safety concerns and the requirements of local guide associations and the international guide association IFMGA (in which our guides are trained). Considering the complexity and length of the route, it is difficult for one guide to ensure the safe and comfortable movement of a large group.

It is optimal to fly to Geneva airport, from where a shuttle will pick you up to Chamonix. Meeting with the guide at the bus stop in Chamonix. Arrival before 18:00

In the Chamonix Valley, we will help you rent an apartment or book a hotel.

On the mountain you will stay in a typical alpine mountain hut. Where there is a large dining hall and dormitories, usually with 4–12 beds. Sanitary conditions: shared toilet, washbasins.

The hut offers half board: breakfast with bread, jam, butter, cheese and jamon and, depending on the region, cereal served along with coffee or tea. Dinner consists of 2-3 courses: soup, pasta, sometimes salad, main course with a small amount of meat, dessert. Vegetarian or other dietary requirements are accommodated.

You can order soft drinks, beer and wine. Snacks and lunch are also available for purchase. There is no drinking water in the higher huts and you will have to buy bottled water.

At the exits, the first aid kit is with the guide. Contact with rescuers is possible from any point along the route. Individual medications must be taken with you.

The high season for mountaineering in the Western Alps is mid-July and August, mainly due to the stable weather at this time of year. During the day, temperatures can vary from 30°C in the valleys to -10°C on a clear morning when we start our day at the hut at altitude.

  • excellent physical fitness: endurance for 5 hours of climbing (vertical up to 1400 meters); the total ascent time takes 8-10 hours;
  • technical skills: confident walking with crampons; experience of climbing routes 4a (French classification).

This program is potentially dangerous to the health and life of any of the participants. Guides provide the necessary safety provided that participants comply with safety regulations.
The decision to stop climbing in conditions that threaten the safety of the participants is within the exclusive competence of the guide and is not subject to discussion.
