This hiking to the Carpathians is aimed at preparing for more difficult hikes and ascents in the high mountains. However, it will be of interest to anyone who wants to see the Carpathians in winter and climb Petros and Ukraine’s highest peak, Hoverla.
The program will expand your knowledge about:
β rules of conduct in the mountains in winter and methods of survival in extreme winter conditions;
β tactics for winter hiking in the mountains;
β avalanche safety and methods for identifying avalanche-prone areas.
During the program, we’ll stay in a comfortable guesthouse, with 2-4 people per room. Showers and toilets are shared. Electricity and a kitchen are available. A sauna awaits us at the end of the program.

Meeting in the village of Yasinya before 12:30 PM. Arrival and accommodation at the Kozmeshchik tourist base, which lies at the foot of Hoverla and Petros, and is the starting point for ascents of these mountains. Safety briefing. Introductory lecture on winter hiking and safety. A walk in the surrounding area is also available.

Early rise and breakfast. We’ll set off for the ascent no later than 9:00 AM. Today, we’ll climb Hoverla. The total distance to the summit is 9 km, with an elevation gain of 1,100 m. The climb takes an average of 4-6 hours. Much of the route is through forest, and from 1,500 m we enter a meadow, where winter weather is often windy and visibility is limited. A short photo session at the summit. The descent to the Kozmeshchik shelter takes about 2-3 hours. Overnight at the Kozmeshchik tourist base.

Climbing Mount Petros. Petros, 40 meters lower than Hoverla, is one of the most beautiful peaks in the Ukrainian Carpathians. From the summit of Petros, weather permitting, a magnificent panorama of all the surrounding ridges opens up. After the ascent, we descend to the Kozmeshchik shelter, share our impressions, and warm up in the bathhouse. Overnight in a guesthouse, a festive evening, and the presentation of certificates.

Basics:
- Backpack 60-80 liters (Please note that in addition to personal items, food and public equipment must beΒ there) (More about choosing a backpack);
- Backpack for mountaineering 20-30 l. (for warm clothes, a thermos and snacks during the ascent)
Shoes and clothing:
- Trekking boots with warm socks (it’s important that the shoes are comfortable and well-broken in. Typically, shoes with a thick toe box and 1.5 to 2 sizes larger than your foot size are chosen) (More about choosing clothes and boots);
- Change of shoes (crocs or flip-flops);
- Gaiters (overshoes) for boots;
- Down jacket or warm jacket with a hood;
- Rain cape (if your outdoor clothing gets wet);
- Warm hat;
- Balaclava/buff;
- Ski pants or insulated pants;
- Membrane walking pants;
- Membrane walking jacket;
- Thermal underwear set (if not equipped with thermal underwear, long johns and a jacket);
- Warm jacket (polar, fleece);
- 3 pairs of socks (thermal socks or other thick ones);
- Overnight socks (preferably wool);
- Gloves or mittens (down or ski gloves, but make sure they are windproof);
- Thin fleece gloves;

- A cover for the assault backpack (or large plastic bags for packing things);

- Personal Hygiene products (a toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste, a bar of soap, and a little shampoo will suffice; avoid full bottles of shower gel and shampoo, or piles of creams and lotions);
- Documents;
- A personal first aid kit (bandages, cold remedies, stomach remedies, and headache remedies. Also, be sure to consider any specific or chronic illnesses you may have. In addition to the personal first aid kit, the guide will have a communal one);
- Ski mask (goggles are also acceptable);

- Thermos (1 liter);

- Under butt pad (for sitting at rest stops);
- Trekking poles;

The Yasinya railway station is open until 12:30. Several trains go to Yasinya, so it’s best to meet there. You can also drive directly to Kozmeshchik in your own car (SUVs are required in winter).
We live in a guest house. Accommodations are 2-4 people, with a shared shower, heating, electricity, and a kitchen. There’s also a sauna.
We purchase food centrally. The guide prepares the food, and the participants actively assist.
Breakfast is hot: porridge or pasta, for lunch there are sandwiches with tea, dinner is hot: borscht, banosh, etc. We also give out dried fruits and chocolate to take with you on the ascent.
Kyivstar and Vodafone work well in Kozmeshchyk, and Life also works in some places. Life also works well in the Polonyna valley. 4G is only available in the Polonyna valley.
Internet is mobile only, 4G is only available in the meadows and populated areas (Yasinya, Lazeshchyna)
The program is potentially dangerous to your health and life, as you will be at high altitude for some time, in areas with limited visibility, heavy snowfall, and freezing temperatures. It is crucial to follow all the guide’s instructions and stay with the group. Before setting out on the route, the group must register with the Ministry of Emergency Situations. The guide will have the phone number of rescuers.
The guide will have a first aid kit. It’s also a good idea to bring along headache, stomach, and cold medications.
